Frequently Asked Questions

At RWPsychology, we understand that taking the step to attend psychological services can be a bit overwhelming. That’s why we have answered some frequently asked questions,  in order to assist you in finding the right service for you and your family.

The First Session

The first session is usually a chance to gather information and allows the psychologist to assist you in developing a treatment plan. Most of the time is spent gathering your history and helping you plan a way forward.

How many sessions will I need?

This question is quite difficult to answer as it all depends on the person and their circumstances. Most people gain some benefit from a few sessions, however some people with more complex and chronic conditions may require a series of regular appointments. Usually, your psychologist should be able to give you an indication of the expected duration of treatment at your initial consultation.

But I have seen someone before and it didn’t help. Should I try again?

It is extremely important that you feel comfortable with your psychologist, as it will assist you in working through any difficulties you may be facing. All psychologists use different approaches and treatment methods and suggest that if you decide to try again that you speak about your previous experiences during your initial consultation.

Do I need a referral to visit RWPsychology?

The short answer is no. Anyone can come to see a psychologist for a consultation and many people do before seeking a referral. A general GP referral, however, can provide you with an access to rebates for your sessions under certain government schemes.
